Due to the regular use of esoteric language and statistical notation, it can be quite a challenge to learn and understand statistical methods. For this reason, I set up this website to introduce various statistical methods, relating to flood hydrology, with the intention that it would be understandable to someone with very little statistical knowledge. The website is currently lacking in content, having only one subject specific to statistics for hydrology; 'extreme value analysis' (EVA). The intention is to add more in due course

As well as simplicity, there is an emphasis on implementation of the methods within a free and widely available environment. In the EVA implementation section, the application of EVA in 'R' (programming language and associated software environment) is outlined. The very basics of the Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH) methods are touched upon (under the heading ‘Regional Frequency Analysis’ in the ‘How it works’ section). There is also some guidance about the use of R to implement the FEH methods in the UKFE: FEH quick guide section.

Lastly, although the site is for those without a strong mathematical or even statistical background, the core mathematical expressions are provided. I hope my efforts to simplify a complex subject are fruitful and I hope you find the site beneficial.

Yours

Anthony Hammond
